Super Mario Bros. Smashes the Box Office
(
2023)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters Wednesday for the long Easter weekend. The animated movie features a stacked cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.
Early into production, the movie almost immediately received criticism, particularly around Chris Pratt voicing Mario. Production persisted, however, and after the weekend it appears as if audiences could care less as to whatever the critics were saying. Indeed, Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo's efforts appear to have paid off massively. The movie smashed records this weekend. Here are the highlights:
- Biggest video game opening of all time
- Highest grossing debut of 2023
- Biggest five day opening of all time (for movies released on Wednesday)
- Highest grossing debut for Illumination (beating 2015's "Minions")
- Second biggest opening for an animated movie (behind "Finding Dori")
As of the time of this writing, the film is sitting at $375 million world-wide at the box office. Outlets are now speculating whether or not the film will be the first of the year to hit $1 billion. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and we'll let you know if it does!
